Devil’s Tower
Devils Tower is a sacred area for several indigenous nations, who know it as Bear Lodge. Some people come here to walk around the rock, a volcanic butte rising high above the surrounding prairie. Some come to climb it, although the Native people ask that it not be done.
For many, it is associated with Close Encounters of the Third Kind, in which people were drawn to the butte, even making mashed-potato sculptures of it. Clarians are sensitive, and after watching the movie, many began making their own versions with potatoes. Aura went to investigate.
